I have a cup of tea pretty much every morning, so with Valentine’s Day approaching I decided to make my morning cup of tea a little more festive! I made these DIY heart shaped tea bags in just a few minutes, and filled them with my favorite cranberry orange herbal tea (which turns a gorgeous red/pink color when brewed). Perfect for Valentine’s Day!

The great thing about these tea bags is that they are so easy to make, and you can make them in any shape for any holiday or event!

Here’s what you need to make your own heart shaped tea bags:

  • fillable tea bags (coffee filters will also work!)
  • pink or red thread
  • sewing machine
  • loose tea (this is the cranberry orange tea that I used)
  • pink or red baker’s twine, string, or yarn
  • pink or red felt
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • teaspoon

Start by drawing a heart onto your tea bag (or if you’re using coffee filters, stack two on top of each other and draw a heart onto one of them).

Sew around the heart, just inside the pencil line, leaving a small gap near the bottom.

Cut out the sewn heart, making sure to cut off all pencil marks. I know pencils aren’t made with actual lead, but it’s still probably best to avoid drinking graphite with your tea! Alternately, you can use a food safe marker and then you can sew right over the line and don’t have to worry about ingesting it in your tea later!

Use your teaspoon to fill the tea bag with loose tea (I like about 1-1/2 to 2 teaspoons of herbal tea per cup) and then sew the gap closed.

Attach a long piece of baker’s twine to the tea bag. Then cut a small heart out of felt and attach it at the other end of the baker’s twine to make a little “tag” for your tea bag!

When you’re ready to brew your tea, just drop a tea bag in a mug, fill with hot water, steep for a few minutes, and enjoy!

Note: For herbal tea you want to use super hot water, almost still boiling, and steep for 5-7 minutes depending on how strong you like your tea.
